In 2018, I bought my first lathe, and what started as a simple hobby quickly grew into something much more meaningful. The idea of transforming wood – especially pieces that would otherwise end up in a fireplace – into something lasting and beautiful became a passion that I couldn't ignore.

My name is Lubomír Kuča, and I discovered woodturning during a holiday at my grandparents' house. There's a tool shed that my great-grandfather, a violin maker, used to work in. I've always been drawn to giving new life to things that others might consider unwanted or useless. Wood, especially discarded pieces, holds so much potential. Every scrap or damaged log tells a story and can be transformed into something unique. This is what drew me into woodturning, and it continues to inspire me every day.

One of the things I truly enjoy about woodturning is working with green wood. As it dries, the wood naturally shrinks and warps, and I find the entire process fascinating. These changes bring out unique shapes and characteristics in each piece, making them one-of-a-kind. Watching the wood transform as it dries, and seeing how it takes on its own personality, adds an extra layer of beauty and unpredictability to my work. It's this natural evolution that makes each creation feel special and personal.

I also enjoy combining traditional woodturning techniques with more modern approaches, like using spray paint and stencils on my wooden objects. I love how this fusion brings out a unique contrast, blending the timeless beauty of handcrafted wood with contemporary artistic expression. It's a way for me to honor the old skill while adding my personal touch, creating pieces that feel both classic and fresh.

My father-in-law works at a botanical garden in Germany, and often, when a tree falls during a storm or needs to be cut down for any reason, I'm fortunate enough to receive some of the wood he brings me.
